James W. Patterson (1817-1881), a Captain in the Confederate Army, came from Burnsville, North Carolina, to Arkansas and located in Marion County in 1848. He was the father of Robert Fulton Patterson.
Robert Fulton Patterson was married twice -- Huldah Willis and later Mary Rea. The children of Robert Fulton and Ruidah Willis were: William J., Ella, LouAnne, and Fulton. The children of Robert Fulton and Mary Rea were: Nola, Huldah and James. W. J. Patterson married Dora Belle Wilson and their children were: Lena, Willie, Huldah and Jeff . Lena married Clay Nowlin, and their children were: Neva, who died in infancy; William Clay, Lucian and Lena (twins). William Clay and Lucian are deceased.
Willie's first husband was Arthur McVey and they were the parents of William Arthur McVey. Her second husband was Leslie Rice. Huldah married Marvin Melton, and both met tragic deaths. Huldah was killed in a car wreck and Marvin met death when a plane crashed.
Jeff's first wife was Ruby Jones and they had one child that died in infancy. His second wife was Ruby Billings and they were the parents of three children.
For many years W. J. Patterson operated a general store at Summit. Lena began teaching while in her teens. She taught in country schools; later in the old school at Yellville. After the consolidation between Yellville and Summit took place, she taught in the Yellville-Summit School for many years. Willie has worked in government offices. Both Huldah and Marvin were teachers.
Ella Patterson remained single. After the death of Fulton's first wife, Ella helped him rear his children.
LouAnne Patterson married Paul Wood. Their children were: Neville, Ivon, Ralph, Sybil, Maggie, Woodrow, Pauline and Idelia. Ralph married Ruth Nowlin and they had four children; Neville married in Washington and she has one son; Ivon married Horace Bell and they have two or more children; Pauline married Otto Jefferson; Idelia married Pete Hurst; Maggie's first husband was Cecil Hurst and they were the parents of two children. After Cecil's death, she married a Duggins. Woodrow's wife's name is not known and Sybil married after she went to Washington.
Fulton Patterson married (1) Euna Doshier (2) Mae Agnew and (3) Mae Doshier Culdice. He and Euna were parents of Helen, Harry, Malcolm and Mary Hester. Helen remained single; Harry married Earline Hurst and they have two children; Malcolm and his wife, Donna Lee Cunningham Patterson, have four children; Mary Hester is the wife of Jack Dearmore and they are the parents of four children.
Fulton Patterson was Marion County Surveyor for four years, County Clerk for twelve years, and County judge for two years. Before entering politics, he taught in the schools of Marion County. Helen was secretary in the office of the County Superintendent of Schools for thirty-five years. Mary Hester is employed by the Yelcot Telephone Company and her husband Jack works for Arkansas Power and Light Company.
Nola Patterson married Tom Brooksher and they were the parents of Jo Ella. After the death of her husband, Nola married Austin Snipes. Both Nola and Austin lived only a few years after their marriage. Jo Ella lived with her aunts, Mrs. Lucian Weast and Mrs. Virgil Weast. Jo Ella married James Rowe and they are the parents of two sons.
Huldah Patterson married Tom Ott. They were the parents of Roy Lee (died in infancy); Mary; Mildred; Robert (Bob); Sadie; Burl; Cecil; and Sue. Mary married Cheston Rose and they have a daughter, Mavis. Mildred married Binum Roberts and they have three boys and a girl. Bob and his wife, Velma Clarke Ott, have a son. Sadie married G. D. Hudspeth and their children are: Marilyn, Dennis, Lois, David (Butch) who is deceased, Johnny and Lucy. Burl married Mae Freeman and their children are: Stan and Gwen. Cecil married Lloyd Keeter and they had three children. She later married Leonard Morris and they have one child. Sue married Lester Bibson and they are the parents of five children.
James Patterson married Anne Doshier and they were the parents of Winnie and Jimmy. Winnie and her husband, T. J. Pierce, have two children; Jimmy and his wife, Rosalee (Arnold), have a son.
Another Patterson family was that of Jehu Patterson, a Methodist minister who came from North Carolina. He was a brother of James W. Patterson. He married Rebecca Doshier Adams, who had a daughter by her first husband, Mary, wife of a Collins. The children of Jehu and Rebecca were: Almeda, who married Will Briggs; Dora, wife of a Brady; Bob, who married Mary Matlock; and Marvin, whose wife was Alice Carson.
