Hulen

by Effie Thompson

It is not known when Bill and Jane Hulen came to Marion County, but it was at an early date. Jane had been married before she became the wife of Bill Hulen and was the mother of two sons.

The Hulens were the parents of five daughters: Emma, Matilda, Lucinda, Ida Huldah, and Zada. Emma married __________ Evans and, later, married John Dickerson; Matilda married John Craig; Lucinda married Allen Blankenship; Ida Huldah married James Pyle. Emma and her first husband had a daughter, Thela Evans. She and Mr. Dickerson had no children. Matilda and John Craig were the parents of six children: Bertha, wife of Mack Phillips; Audie, wife of Walter Young; Burley, who married Velma Hand; Harrison, who married Mabel Davis; Talmade (Joe), who married Ruth Turner; and Billie, who married Brian Wood. Lucinda and Allen Blankenship were the parents of: Omery, who married Cassie Gilliland; Carl Walton (Buck), who married Ruby Rowsey; Mary, who married Joe Estes; Bill, whose first wife was Bertie Ferguson, by whom he had three sons and his second wife was Elizabeth Plant; and Eileen, who married Harve Maxey. Ida Huldah and James Pyle were the parents of: Zelma, who first married Delmar Massey who died and then she married Oscar Crunkleton; Alsey, who married Pierce Phillips; Neva who married Pat Herrington; and Jimmie, who is the wife of Lester Lefevers. Zada and Jess Downum were the parents of Elza, who married Vina Vancil; Ancil, who married Virgie McEntire; Homer, who married Alice Jones; Esther and Paul, both of whom remained single.

The daughters of Bill and Jane Hulen and all their children were industrious. Many of them have remained in Marion County and reared their families here. Some are in Boone County. The Crunkleton and Lefever families live in Springfield, Missouri. Many of the younger generation are college graduates, and also many of them take an active part in church work and community activities.
